How to Interpret Statistics
Okay. So most of you are just getting started in WOT. Some of you are just starting to notice your statistics. Some of you have known about em for a while, but you're not sure what all these numbers reallymean. Hopefully this guide will help.
Oh, and two rules.
- Statistics representperformance over time.Statistics are completely useless for predictingoneiteration, but they will provide you with information about how a player performsin general.
- Noonestatistic tells you the whole story.
So lets go over what we have to look at.
Win Rate:This is dead simple. This is how often you win. What does this mean? Well, that's a bit more complicated. At its most basic point, your win rate is a reflection of how much you contribute to a match overall. You are the only common denominator in each of these matches. Win Rate can be modified however, by whenyou're earning your wins, in what tank, and whether or not you platoon. For example, manyplayers experience anoverall drop in win rateduring x3 and x5 weekends, but players with enoughskillexperience anincrease in overall performanceduring those weekends. Why?
- Weaker players feed the strong.A player who has a good grasp of the game can take advantage of the upswing in lower quality players to really shine in comparison. Normally mediocre players are suddenly inflated to above average.
- Platooning becomes more effective.Changes are stacking. Having three good players on a team, three people that can be relied upon makes ahugedifference.
So win rate doesn't tell us everything. What's next?
Damage per game:So DPG. What's this tell us. Well, this is actually a very useful stat. DPG tells us whether you're being carried, or if you're up there slugging it out. A high DPG tells us that you're genuinely putting in the effort. However, if it doesn't match up with...
Survival Rate: ...we know that you're goingtoocrazy, and you're suiciding for damage, or that you're hiding to try and survive longer. Alternatively, if it doesn't match up with...
Kills Per *****: ...we know that you're farming damage. As a rule of thumb, Someone's damage per game should correlate with their kills.
Average Tier: Is how we contextualize this. It's our framework.
...so how does this all tie together. Well lets look at BobbyEveryman. Bobby's 60s look like
51% WR.
700 DPG
.7 KPD
.24 Survival Rate
Tier 8.4
So. Bobby's got a decentwin rate, and a good survival rate. But what's this? His damage and kills-per-game are very low for such a high average tier.Bobby has been carried. His stats show he's not doing enough damage, or earning enough kills.
So what about TanklordJoe? He's got
48% WR
900 DPG
1.1 KPD
.12Survival Rate
Avg Tier 6.4
So what's wrong with Joe? His WR is only average, somewhat low, and his survival rate is low. However, his damage per game looks pretty good for his average tier, and he's got a good **** rate.Joe isn't working with his team.Joe's high stats, but weak overall win rate and survival incidence tell us that he's either overextending, or ending up in fiery last stands that make him look good, but don't contribute enough to the overall goal.
...so what about these Efficiency, Performance, and WN8 numbers?
These are all aggregates. WN8 is generally considered the most useful.
But what does WN8 mean?
WN8 is an at-a-glance look.It looks at damage and winrate primarily, with a side dose of some other stats.WN8 does not tell the whole story though.
Lets look at GeorgeTanker.
1200 WN8
49% WR
1900 DPG
1.3 KPD
.17 survival rate
Avg Tier 8.9
George's win rate and WN8 are both pretty average. His damage per game ishigh,as is his KPD, and his survival rate. As a mostly tier 9 player, we can see that his damage is actually over the average HP. He's normally doing more than his own health in damage. So what's this mean?
George is probably having some bad luck.At the end of the day, luck is a factor. George's individual metrics are all high, so we can look at him and know that he's definitely trying, and he's individually succeeding. He'll work his way out of the slump, if we give him time, so long as he keeps giving it 100% and pumping out that damage.Statistics are subject to trends, but over time, we can rely on them.
So please, embrace your statistics. Use them to keep an eye on yourself and your better players. Diagnose your statistics, recent and otherwise, and use them to improve as a player. It's part of getting better.
